Origin: Theocracy of Rai-dul

One participant, the “sun god”, dons ridiculous robes and wears a wig of old rope or straw. A large tub of water is placed beside them. One by one, the other participants step forward. As they are introduced, they pour a bucket of water over the sun god’s head and yell “Hail, the pretender.” If the supplicant smiles or laughs, something the pretender is allowed to encourage, they become the new pretender.
